The Ultimate Fighting Championship, or the UFC for short, is a US-based Mixed Martial Arts company founded over 27 years ago. It is known to be one of the biggest franchises of said sport, as its fighters earn 100 thousand to one million every year. The UFC has officiated over 500 events.
One of the upcoming events is the UFC 255, which will occur this Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is a numbered event, which means it is generally pay-per-view, features the championship fights, and is held a few times a month. There are five matches for the event, with two main fights: the flyweight title bout for men and women featuring Deiveson Figueiredo, Alex Perez, Valentina Shevchenko, and Jennifer Maia.
The following are the profiles, statistics, and strengths of each fighter, which might give insight into how these main matches will turn out.
Deiveson Figueiredo is the current champion of UFC’s flyweight division. He debuted in the UFC last 2017 but has been practicing martial arts professionally since 2011 and has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Since his debut as a mixed martial arts fighter, he has participated in 20 matches, 19 of which he won and one where he lost. Nine of those wins he won by knockout, 7 of them by submission, and 3 of them by unanimous decision, which was the same for his one loss. As a UFC fighter, he participated in 9 matches, 8 of which he won.
The last fight he had was a UFC fight night and is a rematch with fighter Joseph Benavidez. In their previous fight, Figueiredo was supposed to win the match for the then-vacant title of flyweight champion through technical knockout but was ineligible to be declared because his weight had missed the required weight for the flyweight division.
The rematch was held on July 19, 2020, in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Figueiredo won, defeating Benavidez through technical submission. This match also gave Figueiredo the performance of the night award, also given to Ariane Lipski from the women’s flyweight division.
Alex Perez is an experienced mixed martial arts fighter and is the challenger of the match. He has been into martial arts since he was young and began participating in matches in college. He debuted as a professional fighter in the Tachi Palace Fights, another American-based MMA franchise, and joined the UFC in 2017.
As a professional mixed martial artist, he has 29 matches, with 24 wins and five losses. Among those 24 wins, five of them were through knock out, seven of them were through submission, and 12 by decision. Meanwhile, among his five losses, one was through knockout, three by submission, and one by decision. As a UFC fighter, he participated in seven matches, where he won six matches and lost to one.
His most recent fight was UFC 250, a numbered match against Jussier Formiga. Like all of the matches Perez had, it was held in the US, specifically in Las Vegas, Nevada, last June 6, 2020. Perez won against Formiga through technical knockout. Like Figueiredo, Perez was awarded performance of the night.
Valentina Shevchenko is the current champion of the women’s flyweight division. She is not only an adept fighter in MMA, but is also an expert in other martial arts such as Taekwondo and Muay Thai. She has represented her countries of origin, Kyrgyzstan and Peru, to several international martial arts championships, earning her gold and silver medals.
Schevchenko has a total of over 80 matches with the various martial arts she practices. Among the 80 matches, 22 are of mixed martial arts, with 10 of them officiated by the UFC. Out of those ten matches, she has eight wins and two losses. She won two of them by knockout, two by submission, and four by decision with her eight wins.
Her most recent fight was at UFC 247 to defend her title of women’s flyweight champion for the third time. Fighter Katlyn Chookagian challenged her with the match held on February 8, 2020, in Houston, Texas. Schevchenko defeated Chookagian through a technical knockout. She will soon be defending her title for the fourth time in UFC 255.
Jennifer Maia is a professional boxer and a mixed martial artist who will be challenging Valentina Schevchenko in the women’s flyweight division in UFC 255. She is a seasoned fighter with a decade of experience in MMA. She has a black belt in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Maia has a record of 3 professional boxing matches and 25 MMA matches. She participated in several MMA franchises before becoming a part of the UFC, where she debuted in 2018. From then, she participated in five matches, with three wins and two losses. In those three wins, two of them are through unanimous decisions, and one is through submission. Her two losses are both from unanimous decisions.
Her most recent fight was from UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Shahbazyan, with the opponent being Joanne Calderwood. The event happened last August 1, 2020, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Maia defeated Calderwood through submission and was also awarded Performance of the Night.
UFC has some of the best professional MMA fighters, with their stats and matches speaking for themselves. These two pairs may have their strengths and techniques, but in the end, there can only be one winner.
