Aikido is often translated as "The way of unifying life energy”. It was created as a martial art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.

In essence Aikido trains students to turn an opponents' power against themselves. It achieves this by using the exact degree of control required to neutralise their energy without inflicting undue harm.
