New Year, New You? Why you should try Martial Arts in 2017!8th December 2016
As the saying goes, 'New Year, New Me'. Why not complete the trifecta and add “New Hobby”?
Many people turn to the gym in a bid to get into better shape. However the gym can be quite mundane and if you're not fully committed to it, then it's easy to lose your way.
That's why you need an exciting, new way to work out in 2017. An exercise that's going to keep you fit, keep you having fun and most important, keep you interested.
So our challenge to you in 2017: Try something new, try a martial art!
Which Martial Arts should you try?
Kickboxing is becoming increasingly popular, especially with women! It's a Japanese martial art that draws influence from combat styles such as Karate, Boxing and Muay Thai. It is best used as self-defence but is also popular for cardio combat fitness classes. Kickboxing classes are very physically demanding and are a full body workout, making them a great way to improve strength, co-ordination endurance and flexibility. Plus, if your goal is weight loss, it helps you shed calories and burn fat at a quick pace!
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
When you take a look at the elite fighters in the history of Mixed Martial Arts, many of them are trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. BJJ embraces the idea that smaller people can defend themselves against larger and stronger opponents. This is why it is an effective form of self-defence. A BJJ class also has a host of health benefits. Due to it's physical nature, it's beneficial for fitness and flexibility. It is also good for increasing reaction times and improving co-ordination.
Aikido is a Japanese art that was created with the purpose of defending yourselves against larger opponents in such a way that will not cause injury to them. It focuses heavily on precision and control. As an art, it encourages harmony and avoiding confrontation.
It also has a lot of benefits. It is less focused on aggression and strength and puts more emphasis on discipline, co-ordination and perceptual awareness.
Krav is quickly becoming one of the most popular Martial Arts in the west. Formed by Imi Lichtenfeld, Krav Maga is a fighting system that was initially designed for the Israeli Special Forces. The basic principles will teach you how to disarm, disable and control an aggressive situation and in particular, against punches, kicks, chokes and attacks from behind.
It will improve your perceptual awareness as it focuses on how to spot danger and take advantage of your surroundings. It's also a great way of building physical strength. So not only can you achieve your New Year's resolution, you can also learn a valuable life skill.
This may be a bit of a curveball comparatively to the other styles we just suggested, but Fencing is actually great fun! It's a great way to improve your stamina, focus and reactions. It's certainly not as easy as it looks and is perfect if you and a friend or partner are looking for an activity you can do together.
