One thing that caught my eye in recent weeks is the growth in people looking for and promoting Choi Kwang Do.
What is Choi Kwang Do?
Choi Kwang Do is a unique martial art. It is one of the few martial arts styles that is completely non contact. There is no competitive fighting and it places more emphasis on the mental, physical and emotional benefits of learning a martial art.
It was developed in the late 1970's by Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi, a South Korean Martial Artist. It is flexible and fluid and took influence from yoga-based stretching as well as Tae Kwon Do.
Why choose Choi Kwang Do classes?
All martial arts styles have their benefits and Choi Kwang Do is no different.
It is heavily regarded as being good for beginner's as it improves your technique without putting you in a combat situation. For many kids, Martial Arts can be intimidating before you get involved. If you're pitted against someone bigger than you, it's easy to be a bit scared. Choi Kwang Do removes that fear factor.
A Choi Kwang Do class focuses heavily on movement and fluidity and it is particularly good or self defence. It's more gentle nature makes it suitable for all age groups.
There are also the mental benefits such as improving confidence, learning humility, respect, perseverance and most of all discipline. It's an art of conflict resolution and teaches that conflicts can be solved without resorting to physical engagement.
Choi Kwang Do as self-defence
CKD is extremely pragmatic in it's nature. It teaches techniques that can easily be applied to a real situation and encourages avoiding physical confrontation. However, as we all know, this is not always possible. So if needs to be the moves that are taught can be applied in a combat situation and are effective if carried out correctly.
As a self defence art, it is of high value due to the ease of learning. It improves health, reflexes and perceptual awareness. Knowing how to sense danger and being aware of what is going on around you makes the chances of avoiding conflict a lot higher.
Between the start of December 2016 and the end of January 2017, there were more than 210,000 violent crimes committed in the UK. These included people being attacked, mugged and raped amongst other crimes. Knowing self defence can go a long way to limiting the potential damage of these situations. Choi Kwang Do is a great way to start.
